Program Overview Paralegal
Careers in the legal profession can be very rewarding.
A Legal Administrative Assistant (LAA) works under the supervision of a lawyer or a senior Paralegal. The LAA is responsible for organising the files, preparing correspondence and managing appointments. LAAs also take charge of the Bring Forward (B/F) and diary systems and prepare standard documents for review by the lawyer. Organisation, Time Management, Client Relations, Research, Writing and Transcription skills are fundamental to the LAA position.
In British Columbia (BC), a Paralegal is expected to take on a higher level of accountability than the LAA. Praxus provides for an LAA (who is a Praxus graduate or a graduate from a recognised LAA program) to continue into the Praxus Paralegal program.
According to the Practice Management guidelines of the Law Society of BC, Paralegals work closely with a lawyer and interview clients and witnesses for information purposes, prepare draft pleadings and Court Forms in Civil Litigation and Family Law, research the law and organise general legal documentation. Since the Paralegal has a higher level of accountability and responsibilities, that Certification is worth more in the legal marketplace than an LAA or Legal Secretary.
LAAs and Paralegals work in large, medium, and small law firms across BC; they work with individual practitioners; Public, Private, and Crown Corporations; Federal and Provincial Government Agencies; Municipal Corporations; Real Estate firms and Non Government Organisations (NGOs); Non Profits and Charities.
